Workshop Purpose

 


The purpose of this five-day Workshop, which convened in Washington, DC from June 28th to July 2nd 2004, was to provide USAID Economic Growth Officers and partners with knowledge, tools, and contacts to better implement programs and activities that promote economic growth in developing and transition countries.


Workshop Objectives
 


The objectives of the Workshop were to enable EG Officers and partners to:

  • Understand the new era of changes in USAID, creation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, advances in knowledge of growth, and global trends.
  • Comprehend the implications of the challenges of HIV/AIDS and microeconomic constraints on business for promoting economic growth.
  • Become aware of what is happening in USAID, including available assisting mechanisms, personnel development, relations with the Department of State, relevant Presidential Initiatives, and strategic directions.
  • Find out the latest on governance issues, including the new USAID strategies on Fragile States and Anti-corruption.
  • Be updated on the thinking on pro-poor growth, including key interventions and the role of agriculture.
  • Hear the latest on globalization, including trade arrangements and the gains, pains, and risks.
  • Gain insights from discussions on best practices and experiences in assisting policy reforms, controlling corruption, developing financial markets, decentralizing fiscally, strengthening property rights, reforming taxes, applying the new institutional economics, building trade capacity, developing micro-enterprises, working with the IMF, and building public private partnerships.
  • Build networks with fellow members of the economic growth community.
